The Love Yourself First Quilt in Love Notes

Karlyn Leslie
Charlie Bear Quilts
I stitched up the baby version of our Love Yourself First Quilt using the charming Love Notes fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs. This sweet line, designed by Lindsay Wilkes of The Cottage Mama, features bright red hearts nestled among soft baby blues and pinks—bringing a playful, retro vibe to the design.

Launching in May 2025, Love Notes includes whimsical details like violin-playing squirrels and delicate music note prints that will strike a chord with the musically inclined. Be sure to check with your local quilt shop to see if they’ll be carrying this delightful collection!

Let’s Make a Love Yourself First Block

Fabric D: Sky Songbirds
Fabric E: Blue Flowers
Binding: Blue Plaid

When planning fabric placement, I like to arrange prints from darkest at the bottom to lightest at the top. This creates a subtle gradient that draws the eye upward. For the hearts, I always choose a bold, high-contrast fabric so they really pop—bright red works perfectly in this quilt, adding a strong visual anchor against the softer surrounding prints.

Start by building from the center of the heart, then work your way outward. After assembling the heart, you’ll add rows of flying geese to expand the design.

The final step is attaching the columns of half-square triangles (HSTs), which form the outer edges of the quilt block. This layout not only frames the heart beautifully but also adds a touch of movement and balance to the overall design.

The final step in completing the Love Yourself First block is attaching the large flying geese unit to the heart section, bringing the entire design together.

As you piece the blocks together, you’ll start to see a chevron pattern emerge, flowing across the quilt and tying all the elements together in a dynamic, eye-catching design.

The Finishing Touches
The quilt is backed with a soft, solid white Minky Cuddle for extra coziness. It’s quilted with the Butterfly Ballet design by Lorien Quilting Publishing, adding a delicate, whimsical finish to the piece.

The Blue Plaid print makes the perfect binding choice—its diagonal pattern gives the look of bias binding without the extra cutting, adding a polished touch with minimal effort.

I used a double layer of 100% cotton batting to add extra loft and give the quilting more definition and texture.

Happy sewing! The Love Yourself First Quilt is a joy to stitch and so simple to follow—you’ll find yourself coming back to it again and again. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, each version brings its own charm. Enjoy every stitch!
